WHAT IS CCIS?

CCIS (Center for Chinese Indonesian Studies) is a studies center under the institute for research and community service of Petra Christian University. Its main focus is in the studies of things related to the lives of Chinese Indonesia community.

Chinese Indonesian community has been a part of Indonesia since before Indonesia – as a nation – was established. However there have not been many aspects about this community that have been academically researched. Since their migration from China until now, there have been tremendous localization and acculturation, which from their unique identity and various ways of living, CCIS puts its concerns on these processes.

PROGRAMS & ACTIVITIES

CCIS endeavors to involve various stakeholders in its mission. It involves and serves academic communities in their efforts to build understanding on the lives of Chinese Indonesian Community based on scientific foundation. CCIS gathers and provides data and information pertaining to the lives of Chinese Indonesian community, which can support national as well as international development efforts. CCIS also provides data and information for the society in general, which can improve the harmonious relation of people with different ethnic backgrounds.

CCIS’ programs and activities can be divided into four broad categories:

  1. Documentation
    CCIS makes documentation of the lives of Chinese Indonesian community, supported by Petra Christian University Library by developing a special collection named: Chinese in Indonesia (bound copies as well as digital). The collection consist of published materials as well as unpublished ones, such as research data, local history, oral history, other documents and photos from personal/family/organizational collections, heritage, and other archival materials.
  2. Research
    CCIS does researches on any aspects of the lives of Chinese Indonesian, conducted in multi-disciplinary approach, such as linguistics, literature, anthropology, sociology, architecture, economy and business. Researches are open to be conducted by CCIS scholars or in collaboration with other organizations in Indonesia and overseas.
